Our Story

Casa Maria Cartagena has been a labor of love for the proprietors – two Americans, one of Colombian heritage (Maria) – who fell in love and married in Cartagena.

Soon after the two met, during an enchanting walk around the old city late one evening, they knocked on the door of an old home on the street where Maria’s mother once lived. Shortly thereafter, they acquired it, and, working with the well-known colonial architect Javier Acevedo, restored the home to its original colonial glory but with some important contemporary amenities (including a swimming pool).

They were married there in 2009, with guests overflowing into the street while mariachi bands played.

Today, Casa Maria Cartagena is a private retreat for the couple, their family, and friends. It is also available for rent to select clientele. The home features touches from the couple’s travels around the world.

Welcome to Casa Maria Cartagena, an ideally-located exclusive private home in Cartagena de las Indias, Colombia. Casa Maria is an original colonial home within the walled old city of Cartagena, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Our colonial home was built in 1650 when Cartagena was a Spanish colonial city and personally restored by the proprietors in 2009. This private home brings together contemporary amenities with the true old-world Cartagena experience that many of our friends, family, and select clientele are seeking.
