The old city of Cartagena is a relatively small area and one can traverse it by foot in just 30 minutes. Some parts of the old city are more commercial, some more touristic, and others a perfect blend of old world and new world.

Plaza San Diego is our favorite area of the city. The plaza is surrounded by some of the city’s best restaurants – including Juan Del Mar and La Cevicheria – which have outdoor seating right on the plaza. It’s perhaps the best place in the city for people-watching, where every evening you can find musicians and performers, as well as the local glitterati. The 5-star Hotel Santa Clara (Sofitel) is right on the plaza, which means there is a 24-hour taxi stand and there are always people around.

Casa Maria Cartagena is just steps off Plaza San Diego (literally one house away from the corner of the plaza) which means it is tranquil and quiet inside, but fun and bustling outside.

In our view, Casa Maria Cartagena is one of the best located homes in the city. Within three blocks in each direction you can find: a large grocery, pharmacy, and department store, Citibank, salsa classes, a taxi stand, a vegetarian store, an open-air vegetable market, a dozen good restaurants and bars, the best pizza restaurant in the city, the home of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and the fortress walls of the city with views of the ocean.

If location is important to you when you travel, you will find Casa Maria Cartagena ideal for an enjoyable and convenient stay in the old city.
